Introduction

Alappuzha also known as Alleppey, is a town in Alappuzha District of Kerala state of Suthern India. A town with picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches ans logoons, it was described as the one of the places known as “Venice of East  by Marco Polo. It is the administive headquators of Alappuzha District. Malayalam is the most spoken language. Hindi, English and Tamil are also widely understood in the town.

 

Climate

The Summer season varies between March to May. During  this period the tempertature varies between 220  to 350 Celsius. The percentage of humidity is very high during this period. The months ranging from Auguest to September and Feburary to March are best time to visit the City.

Alappuzha is well connected to Madurai, Chennai, Mumbai and many towns in North. Its well connected to Cochin in the North and Trivandrum in the South by regular train services.

Alappuzha is well conneted as it on the NH47 which connect all the towns in Kerala. KSRTC buses connect Alappuzhato all major towns in Kerala.

Champakulam Church

One of the oldest churrches in Kerala, the st. Mary’s Church is believed to be one of the seven established by St. Thomas. The annual feast at this church falls on the 3rd Sunday of October ervery year.

 

Kuttanad

Kuttanad, called the rich bowl of kerala because of her weath of paddy crops, is at the very heart of the backwaters.

 

Edathua Church

24kms fom Alappuzha, on the Alappuzha – Thiruvalla Road established  in 1810, the church is dedicated to St. George. It is believed that prayer and offereing at this church to help all mental illness.

 

Pathiramanal

One of the most popular pinic spot in Alappuzha, The pier, which extends  into the sea here, is about 140 years old.

 

Sri Krishna Temple

Bulit in typical kerala architectural  style, this temple is famous all over India for the Palpayasam, the daily offering of deliciously sweet milk porridge. Chavera bhavan is the ancestral home of the blessed kuiakose Elias  Chavara. It is now a holy shrine and spriritual resort where thousands of devotees.

 

Alappuzha – Aquatourism

With the Arabian sea on the west and a vast networks of lakes, lagoons and fresh water rivers criss crossing it, Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty. Referred to as the Venice of the East Ambalappuzha.

 

Alappuzha Beach

This is one of the most popular pinic spot. Is there is also an old lighthouse which is great fascination for visitors.

 

Nehru Trophy  Boat Racing

It is held annually on the second Saturday of August  at the Vembanad Lake and is the most important tourist event of Alappuzha. Boats sponsored by different villages compete  fiercely in the compeition. The highlight of this of this prestigious  event is  “Chundan Vallams”, the 130 feet long snake boat, with over 100 rowers, 4 heldsmen and 25 cheer Leaders, decorated with colorful silk umbrellas. Tickets for the race  are available on the day from mumerous ticket stands on the way to the where race is held. The punnamada Kayal is the starting points for the race.

 

Kumarakom

Tourism is Kumarakom largely revolves around the backwaters of the Vambanad Lake. Several luxury and budget resorts lined up on the shores of the provides tourists with facilities for bating, yaching and Fishing, with panoramic views of the Lake. The other major attraction is the Bird Sanctuary. Which can be visited  by canoes arranged by local fisherman at the entrance to the sanctury. A two hour  rowing canor trip is quite cheap, and is best undertaken in the evening or early moring to avoid the afternoom sun.

 

Best Season & Time to Visit

Alleppey, being a coastal area, is humid all through the year. The best time to visit the place is between September to March.
