Intoduction

 

Munner town is spread over 212 acres. The hills in this area are called the kannan Devan Hills. According to one version the hills are named after Kannan Devan Thever,a landlord in the Anginaad Valley. On the three hillocks separate by three streams,are the main temple, church and mosque of the Munnar Town.

Rolling ocean of the tubby green tea bushes, crisp mountain air, craggy hills, wildlife and a throw back to colonial times makes Munnar alovely gateway.

Travel Tips

 

Studyy walking shoes are a must. A crepe bandage, ointment of sprays to relieve inflammation, war, clothing even in May and a walking stick. Few locals understand either English or Hindi.

 

When to Go

 

Enjoys a refreshing climate, year round. The best time is between September and May. Monsoons, from June to August bring relentless rains. In Summer the temperature in high range stand between 150C to 250C. In winter temperature is between 00C to 150C.

 

Getting There

 

The nearest airport is Nudumbassery in Cochin at 130 kms drive in Munnar. Connected by road to Madurai 142 kms. Coimbatore  - 167 kms, Kozhikode – 28 7 kms, Trivandrum – 302 kms. There are no direct Trains to Kottayam, Kozhikode, Trivandrum. From Cochin there 8 daily Buses and prepaid Cab services operated by the KTDC from Airport.

Eravikulam National Park

 

Rajamali in the Eravikulam National Park is about 17 km from Munnar. The Sanctuary provides close viewing of the Nilgiri Thar, an endangered species. More than half of the Nilgiri Thar is found in the sanctury. The other interesting sight is the flowering of the Neelakurinji in the forests and grasslands. This flower blooms only once in 12 years. This next bloom is expected in 2018 & 2030 AD only. The other animal sighting \s commonly reported are panther, Sambhar, Barking Deer, Gaur, Gaint Malabar Squirral etc. The sanctuary is 4 kms from Munnar – Marayoor Road.

 

Marayoor (36km)

 

This  small town is famous for the sandal wood forest in the surrounding region. Permission is required from the forest authorities to venture into the forest.

 

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary (70km)

 

This Sanctuary is furthur on the Munnar – Udumalaipet road. This road cuts through the Sanctuary. The best time for animal sightseeings is in the Evening and Early Morings. Common wildlife sightseeings are Elephants and gaur besides some rar birds. There are watch towers erected in the forests, with permission from the authorities on can use it to spend a night watching wildlife.

 

Mattupetty (13km)

 

The indo swiss project here attracts a lot of trekking. The fresh mountain air the mistclad hills panoramic view make it worth.

 

Rajamalai

 

This is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Thar. Half the word population of the rar mountain goat, which is fast becoming etinct, is now found here. The Nilgiri Thars are today reduced to small herds found in Eravikulam – Rajamali region. The total number of Nilgri Thars in Rajamali is estimated at 1317.

Elephants rescued from the forests being cared  for, the elephants are also trained here kodanadu I  15km from Perumbavoor, which is on the Cochin – Munnar routes.

 

Echo Point (15 km from Munnar)

 

This scenic place gets its name from the domestic tourists, the exotic cattle, rose gardens, lush green meadows and the dam with boating facilites are the major attractions. Top Station (14km) and Kundala Lake (12km) are the other attractions in the area.

 

Devikulam (16km)

 

This is another hill station 30 minutes fom Munnar. The lake and the tea plantations are the major attractions.

 

Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary

 

This sanctuary is 12 km from Kothamangalam whisch is on the Cochin – Nunnar routes.

 

Suryanelly (27km)

 

This hill resort is 40 minutes from Munnar. The Lake and the Tea plantations are major attractions the routs to suryanelly winding through the hills is a delight. There is excellent accommodation facility here.

 

Kodanadu

 

This is a forest elephant care centre, here you see baby elephants.

 

Pothamedu (6km from Munnar)

 

Pothamedu offers an excellent view of tea, coffee and caradamom plantation in Munnar. The rolling hills the lush mountain and the breathtaking scenery here is ideal for trakking and long mountain walks.

 

Pallivasal (8km from Munnar)

 

This is venue of the first Hydro Electo project in Kerala and a place of immense senic beauty.

 

Attukal (9km from Km Munnar)

 

A place of waterfalls and rolling hills, Attukal  located between Munnar and Pallivasal, is a feast for the eyes. The place is also ideal for long treks.

 

Nayamakad (10km from Munnar)

 

Located between Munnar and Raja malai, Nayamakad is an land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 meters. The enchanting surrounding makes an excellent picnic spot and trakking point.

 

Power House waterfalls (18km from Munnar)

 

Thiswaterfall on the way to thekkady from Munnar cascades down a steep rock 2000m above sea level. The spot is enriched with the scenic western mountain ranges, is an ideal place for a break on the way to the periyer wildlife sanctuary in Thekkady.

 

Kundala Lake (20km from Munnar)

 

Kundala Lake is a picturesque town on the way to top station. The golf course which belongs to tata Tea  Ltd, Is located here the kundala lake artificial dam is another attraction. Aruvikkad waterfall is also near in Kundala Lake.

 

Anayirankal (22m from Munnar)

 

It’s  a lush green carpet of tea plants. A trip on the splendid reservoir is an unforgettable experience. The Anayirankal Dam is surrounded by the tata tea plantation and evergreen forests. It is an ideal picnic spot.

 

Cheeyappara Waterfalls (49km from Munnar)

 

The Cheeyappara and Varala Waterfalls are located between Neriamangalam and adimali on the Cochin – Madurai Highway. The Cheeyappara waterfalls cascade down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes. This is also a great places for trekking.

 

Top Station (32km from Munnar)

 

1700m above sea level, this is th ehighest point on the Munnar – Kodaikanal Road. The rare Neelakurunji belongs to this region. This plant blooms once every twelve years bathing the hillsides in bright blue. Top Station also offers a panoramic view of the neighbouring state of Tamilnadu.

 

Thommankuthu (17km from Thodupuzha)

 

The seven step waterfalls here is a much loved picnic spot. At each step there is a cascade and a pool beneath.  Thommankuthu is an ideal place for adventure tourism.

 

Nadukani (2 km from Idduki)

 

Moolamattam town, Malaankara lake etc, can be viewed from the high pavilion situated here.

 

Palkulamedu (12km from Idduki)

 

Cochin, Alleppey and other nearby towns can be seen from the peak which is located 2125meters, above sea level.
