Introduction

Cochin formerly knownas Cochin is a major part city located on the west coast of India by the Arabian Sea. Cochin is opart of of the district of Ernakulam in the state of Kerala. How to Reach

By Air : The air gateway to Cochin is the Cochin International Airport located at Nedumbassery, which is about 25kms north of Cochin City, and handles both domestic and International flights. It is the first international airport in India to be built without Central Government funds.

By Train : The city has two railway stations – Ernakulam junction and Ernakulam Town. The main rail transport system in Cohin is operated by the Southern Railway Zone of India Railways and comes under Trivandrum Railway Division.

By Road : Cochin is well conneted to neighbouring cities and states via several highways. It is a node in the North-South Corridor of the National Highway System.

Bolgatty Island

This long narrow palm-fringed islan, easily accessible from the mainland, is where the Bolgatty Palace is situated amidst 15 acres of lush green lawns. Built by the dutch in 1744, it became the seat of the British Resident later. In 1976 the palace was converted into a hotel under the Kerala Tourism Development Corportation. The Cochin Golf Club’s course is on the palace grounds.

Cherai Bearch

Located 25 kms from Ernakulam in a typical village ambitnce is the lovely unspolit stretch of sand, ideal for swimming. But if the sea and sand still do not what your appetite, there’re any number of food outlets and ice-cream parlours to do so. At Cherai, life guards are always on the look out for the adventurous. Dolpins are also  commonly seen in the waters.

Chinese Fishing Nets, Fort Cochin

These fixed, cantilevered  fishing nets, at the entrance of the harbour and along the backwaters, were introduced by traders from the court of kublai Khan. Records show that they were first erected between AD1350 to AD 1450. The best place to watch these nets is from Vasco da Gama square, a narrow promenade that lies parallel to the Beach.

Dutch Cemetery, Fort Cochin

Consecrted in 1724, here’s an authentic reminder of the many men and women from Europe who came down all the way to play out their roles in the ccolonial 17^th, 18^th and 19^th centuries.

Fort Cochin Beach

An ideal place for an evening stroll and to watch a spectacular sunset. Bathing and swimming are not recommended here. The colorful carnival at New Year’s Eve is a feature of the beach.

Indo-Portuguese Museum, Fort Cochin

Located within the compound of the beautiful 1506 Bishop’s House, the museum established in a separate building showcases astfacts like statues and coins left back by the Portugese.

Lighthouse, Vypin

The light house at Ochanturuth in Vypin is open from 3 pm to 5 pm, on all days.

Mangalavanam Forest, Ernakulam

This small protected area, a haven for birds, is located on Dr. Salim Ali Road, Adjacent  to the High Court of Kerala.. Best Time to visit : Mid – January to March.

Mount Cermel church, Varapuzha

This 1642 church is the second india vicariath established by Holy Sea after Goa. The portugese church bells are of great interest.
